Science Abbey Standard for Responsible Artificial Intelligence Use
Purpose
Science Abbey recognizes artificial intelligence as a powerful instrument for research, analysis, writing, education, administration, translation, communication, and institutional development. Responsible use of AI can increase human capability, improve access to knowledge, accelerate routine work, and assist the synthesis of complex information.
AI systems, however, can produce factual errors, fabricated citations, misleading interpretations, biased outputs, inappropriate simplifications, privacy risks, and language that appears authoritative without adequate evidentiary foundation. They can also obscure authorship and responsibility when their role is poorly understood.
Science Abbey therefore permits and encourages responsible AI use while maintaining a fundamental principle:
Artificial intelligence may assist human intellectual work, but it does not replace human responsibility for that work.
Any person publishing, approving, or acting upon AI-assisted material on behalf of Science Abbey remains responsible for its accuracy, integrity, appropriateness, and consequences.
1. Human Responsibility
Every Science Abbey publication, analysis, recommendation, decision, or official communication must remain under meaningful human responsibility.
AI systems may generate suggestions, drafts, summaries, classifications, comparisons, calculations, or analyses. They may not be treated as autonomous authorities whose outputs require no further judgment.
The responsible author, editor, researcher, or institutional officer must understand the substance sufficiently to evaluate the material before approving it.
No statement becomes reliable merely because an AI system produced it confidently.
2. Factual Verification
Material factual claims produced or substantially assisted by AI should be verified when they affect the credibility or conclusions of the work.
Greater verification is required when information concerns science, history, law, medicine, economics, public policy, international affairs, statistics, quotations, named individuals, institutional claims, or other subjects where inaccuracies could materially mislead readers.
AI-generated references, quotations, statistics, dates, titles, names, and citations should never be assumed accurate without verification against reliable sources.
Where primary or authoritative sources are reasonably available, they should be preferred.
3. Source Integrity and Attribution
AI must not be used to create the appearance of evidence that has not actually been consulted.
Sources cited in Science Abbey publications should support the claims for which they are presented. Fabricated references, nonexistent publications, invented quotations, and misleading attribution are unacceptable regardless of whether they originate with a human author or an AI system.
Authors remain responsible for examining important sources rather than relying exclusively upon an AI summary of them.
Where AI assists in locating sources, the resulting sources should be evaluated according to the same standards of relevance, authority, reliability, and currency applied to conventional research.
4. Originality and Intellectual Contribution
AI may assist brainstorming, outlining, drafting, editing, restructuring, comparison, criticism, and refinement. Its use should strengthen rather than replace substantive human thought.
Science Abbey authors should contribute the principal intellectual direction of works published under their names. They should determine the arguments, evaluate evidence, make significant judgments, and approve the final conclusions.
AI should not be used to disguise plagiarism, reproduce another author’s distinctive work without appropriate attribution, or create a false impression of scholarship that has not actually been performed.
The institutional objective is to use AI where it increases the quality, efficiency, accessibility, or analytical power of meaningful human work.
5. Disclosure of AI Assistance
Routine AI assistance does not necessarily require disclosure. Uses comparable to spelling correction, grammar assistance, formatting, brainstorming, search assistance, transcription, translation support, or ordinary editorial revision generally need not be individually identified.
Disclosure becomes appropriate when AI has played a substantial role in producing research findings, analytical conclusions, creative content, data interpretation, or other material where knowledge of that involvement would reasonably affect a reader’s evaluation of the work.
Science Abbey may establish more specific disclosure requirements for scholarly research, educational materials, institutional reports, images, audio, video, or other specialized publications.
Disclosure should promote meaningful transparency rather than produce unnecessary declarations that obscure rather than clarify responsibility.
6. Confidentiality, Privacy, and Data Protection
Confidential, privileged, proprietary, personally sensitive, security-sensitive, or otherwise restricted information must not be entered into external AI systems unless Science Abbey has determined that the system and its contractual and technical protections are appropriate for that information.
Particular care is required with personnel records, donor information, financial information, unpublished confidential research, legal communications, passwords, internal security information, and personally identifiable information.
Convenience does not override confidentiality.
Where uncertainty exists, restricted information should not be submitted until appropriate institutional guidance has been obtained.
7. Bias, Fairness, and Human Dignity
AI systems may reproduce biases contained in training data, source material, institutional practices, or the framing of prompts.
Science Abbey personnel should therefore examine AI-assisted material for stereotyping, discriminatory assumptions, inappropriate generalizations, selective representation of evidence, and other distortions affecting individuals or groups.
Human dignity remains the governing ethical standard. AI should assist understanding of people rather than reduce individuals to automated classifications or probabilistic assumptions about their worth, intentions, or capabilities.
Consequential judgments about people should not be delegated solely to automated systems.
8. Scientific and Analytical Integrity
AI-assisted analysis should be held to the same epistemic standards as other Science Abbey work.
Researchers and analysts should distinguish evidence from inference, correlation from causation, established findings from hypotheses, and factual reporting from prediction or speculation.
Where an AI system performs substantial analysis, the responsible person should understand the methodology sufficiently to evaluate its limitations.
AI-generated consensus should not be mistaken for scientific consensus. Scientific conclusions should ultimately be grounded in scientific evidence and credible scholarship.
9. AI in Writing and Publication
Science Abbey permits AI-assisted writing provided that the responsible human author exercises substantive editorial control.
Published material should meet Science Abbey’s normal standards of clarity, accuracy, coherence, proportionality, and intellectual substance regardless of how it was produced.
Editors should remove unnecessary repetition, inflated rhetoric, formulaic transitions, artificial symmetry, excessive headings, unsupported generalizations, and other patterns that diminish the quality of the work.
AI should help writers communicate more effectively, not create greater quantities of unnecessary language.
The final work should represent what the named author or Science Abbey actually intends to say.
10. Synthetic Images, Audio, and Video
AI-generated and AI-edited media may be used for illustration, education, communication, conceptual visualization, and creative purposes.
Synthetic media must not be presented in a manner reasonably likely to deceive audiences about significant real-world facts. Fabricated photographs, voices, documents, events, quotations, or actions involving real people should not be represented as authentic evidence.
Where realism could create material misunderstanding, appropriate labeling or contextual explanation should be provided.
Scientific diagrams, maps, historical reconstructions, and informational graphics should receive particular scrutiny because visual plausibility can conceal factual inaccuracies.
11. High-Stakes Decisions
AI may inform but should not independently determine significant decisions concerning employment, disciplinary action, governance, finances, legal matters, institutional security, major investments, or other decisions materially affecting people’s rights and interests.
Such decisions require identifiable human responsibility and appropriate professional expertise.
The greater the possible consequence of an error, the greater the required level of human review.
12. Corrections and Accountability
AI involvement does not reduce responsibility for mistakes.
Significant factual errors in Science Abbey publications should be corrected transparently when discovered. Where an AI-assisted process contributed to a serious error, the institution should examine whether changes to verification, editorial review, data handling, or AI procedures are required.
An institution committed to inquiry demonstrates its principles most clearly when it corrects its own work.
13. Intellectual Independence
Science Abbey should not become intellectually dependent upon any particular AI company, model, platform, or technological ecosystem.
AI systems are tools rather than epistemic authorities or institutional partners in judgment. Important questions should continue to be examined through primary evidence, scholarship, human expertise, debate, observation, and independent reasoning.
Where appropriate, significant analyses may be tested through multiple methods or systems rather than relying upon a single AI output.
14. Continuous Review
Artificial intelligence is developing too rapidly for responsible policy to remain static.
Science Abbey will review this standard periodically in light of technological capabilities, scientific research, legal developments, privacy and cybersecurity requirements, professional standards, and institutional experience.
The purpose of revision should be neither automatic restriction nor automatic adoption. New capabilities should be evaluated according to evidence, usefulness, risk, human dignity, intellectual integrity, and the mission of Science Abbey.
Governing Principle
Science Abbey approaches artificial intelligence according to the same philosophy it applies to other powerful technologies: with curiosity without credulity, openness without dependency, and innovation governed by evidence and ethics.
AI should expand human agency rather than diminish human responsibility. It should strengthen inquiry rather than manufacture certainty, improve communication rather than replace thought, and increase institutional capability without compromising privacy, originality, accountability, or trust.
The final responsibility remains human.
Science Abbey Statement on AI Use and Copyright
Science Abbey approaches artificial intelligence neither with uncritical enthusiasm nor reflexive hostility. AI presents genuine ethical, economic, legal, and social challenges, some of which will require new institutions, regulations, and norms. It will disrupt some forms of employment while creating or expanding others. It can be misused, as can virtually every powerful technology.
Responsible adoption therefore requires transparency, human judgment, factual verification, respect for privacy, appropriate attribution, and continuing scrutiny of its consequences.
At the same time, artificial intelligence is no longer hypothetical. It exists, it is developing rapidly, and it has already become an extraordinarily useful instrument for research, analysis, writing, translation, education, organization, design, communication, and creative work. The appropriate question is therefore not whether humanity should retreat from AI, but how we can use it responsibly while preserving the values that technological progress is meant to serve.
Copyright is an important part of that discussion. Writers, artists, musicians, researchers, and other creators deserve recognition for their work, and no person should falsely represent another person’s creation as their own. Science Abbey strongly supports attribution, intellectual honesty, and reasonable protections for human creators.
But protecting authorship is not necessarily the same thing as preventing artificial intelligence from learning from humanity’s accumulated intellectual and creative inheritance.
Consider two hypothetical AI systems. One has access to only fragments of human intellectual and artistic history because enormous portions of published culture have been excluded from its training. The other has learned from the broadest feasible representation of human literature, scholarship, science, philosophy, history, and art. Other things being equal, the second system should possess a richer foundation from which to assist future human creativity and inquiry.
There is a larger principle involved. Human civilization has always developed cumulatively. Writers learn by reading other writers. Artists study previous artists. Scientists begin with discoveries made by predecessors. Philosophers respond to arguments extending back centuries. Musicians inherit traditions, forms, techniques, and ideas that they subsequently transform. No generation creates civilization independently of those that preceded it.
Knowledge is inherited, examined, recombined, criticized, improved, and transmitted again.
For that reason, Science Abbey is concerned when protection of legitimate intellectual-property interests becomes indistinguishable from an attempt to prevent new technologies from learning from the cultural inheritance of humanity. Creators deserve reasonable economic protection, but copyright is ultimately a social institution intended to encourage creativity and the advancement of knowledge. It should not become an end in itself.
The purpose of literature, art, science, philosophy, and education extends beyond generating income. These activities preserve knowledge, enlarge human understanding, create beauty, challenge assumptions, communicate experience, and contribute to civilization across generations.
Technological change has repeatedly altered the conditions under which creative work occurs. Printing transformed manuscript culture. Photography transformed visual representation. Recorded sound transformed music. Film created entirely new forms of artistic expression. Computers transformed publishing, photography, music, design, and scientific research. The Internet radically changed the production and distribution of information. In each case, legitimate concerns accompanied technological disruption, but humanity ultimately learned to incorporate new tools into its creative life.
Artificial intelligence represents another such transition, although potentially one of much greater magnitude.
AI and Copyright Law
The legal situation should also be described accurately.
The U.S. Supreme Court has not ruled that AI-generated works are ineligible for copyright because AI systems were trained on copyrighted material. These are separate legal questions.
In Thaler v. Perlmutter, the dispute concerned an image that Stephen Thaler represented as having been created autonomously by his AI system. Lower federal courts concluded that copyright under existing U.S. law requires human authorship. In March 2026, the Supreme Court declined to hear Thaler’s appeal, leaving the lower-court judgment in place. The Supreme Court’s refusal to hear the case did not itself establish a new substantive rule governing AI copyright; it left the existing judgment undisturbed.
The present American approach is consequently more nuanced than the proposition that “AI-generated works cannot be copyrighted.”
Material generated entirely by AI, without sufficient human authorship, is generally not copyrightable. The use of AI within a human creative process, however, does not automatically prevent copyright protection. Human-authored expression can remain protected, as can sufficiently creative human selection, coordination, arrangement, or modification of AI-generated material. Whether a particular work contains sufficient human authorship must be evaluated according to the circumstances of that work.
This distinction is especially important for serious creators. Simply entering prompts into a generative system does not, under current U.S. Copyright Office guidance, necessarily provide sufficient human control over the resulting expressive elements to establish copyright in those outputs. Human creative contribution becomes much clearer when the creator determines expressive elements, modifies generated material, combines it with human-created material, or exercises sufficiently creative selection and arrangement.
A separate legal controversy concerns the material used to train AI systems. Whether particular uses of copyrighted works for AI training constitute fair use depends upon the circumstances and remains an evolving area of law. Federal courts have begun addressing these questions, with some decisions finding fair use in particular circumstances and others producing more qualified results. Questions concerning acquisition of training material, transformative use, market effects, licensing, and the rights of copyright holders remain important subjects of litigation and public policy.
Science Abbey therefore distinguishes between at least three questions that are sometimes incorrectly collapsed into one: whether an AI developer may lawfully use a copyrighted work in training; whether a particular AI output infringes an existing copyrighted work; and whether a human using AI has contributed sufficient original authorship to claim copyright in a resulting work.
These questions deserve careful answers rather than slogans.
Human-Directed AI Creation
Science Abbey’s position is that copyright law should preserve a meaningful place for human-directed AI creation.
The strongest argument is not that every output produced by an artificial intelligence system should automatically receive copyright protection. An autonomously generated output with no meaningful human authorship presents a fundamentally different question from a work developed through sustained human conception, judgment, selection, revision, and creative direction.
Consider an author who conceives a book, establishes its thesis and structure, conducts or directs research, develops arguments, interacts extensively with AI systems, evaluates competing formulations, rejects inadequate material, rewrites passages, verifies factual claims, determines the organization, supplies original ideas, revises successive drafts, and assumes responsibility for the finished work. Whatever role AI played in that process, it would be misleading to describe the resulting work simply as the autonomous creation of a machine.
The same principle can apply to visual art, film, music, design, educational resources, scientific communication, and other forms of expression.
The relevant question should increasingly become not merely “Was AI used?” but “Where did the consequential creative judgment reside?”
If meaningful creative judgment remained with the human being, the law should be capable of recognizing that authorship.
This principle matters for more than the interests of individual creators. If substantial AI-assisted works become difficult to protect merely because sophisticated computational tools participated in their production, creators and institutions may have less incentive to devote years, substantial financial resources, or extensive intellectual labor to ambitious projects. Society could consequently lose books, films, educational resources, artistic works, analytical systems, and other contributions that otherwise might have been produced.
Copyright law should therefore accomplish two objectives simultaneously: protect genuine human creators from exploitation while permitting technological innovation to enlarge the possibilities of human creativity.
A Civilizational Perspective
Science Abbey ultimately regards artificial intelligence within a much longer history of human beings extending their capabilities through tools.
The appropriate response to technological competition is adaptation. Learn the new tools. Understand their limitations. Establish ethical standards for their use. Improve professional skills. Preserve what remains uniquely valuable about human judgment and creativity. And where new technologies genuinely outperform older methods, incorporate them rather than attempting to preserve obsolete practices merely because they are familiar.
This does not require abandoning creators who are economically disrupted by technological change. A humane society should help people adapt through education, retraining, reasonable transition policies, new professional standards, and, where appropriate, revised economic institutions. Technological progress and concern for affected human beings are not opposing principles.
Nor should enthusiasm for AI excuse plagiarism, deception, factual irresponsibility, violations of confidentiality, misrepresentation of authorship, or indifference toward the livelihoods of creators. Those concerns are precisely why responsible AI standards are necessary.
But neither should fear of disruption become a general veto against technological development.
Every person alive today is the beneficiary of an inheritance that no individual created: languages we did not invent, scientific discoveries we did not make, political institutions we did not establish, artistic traditions we did not originate, technologies we did not engineer, and knowledge accumulated through the labor of generations.
We participate in civilization because we inherit from it, contribute what we can during our brief lives, and pass something forward.
Artificial intelligence should be understood within that same civilizational continuum. Humanity should neither worship it nor fear it. We should study it, govern it, improve it, use it responsibly, and direct it toward purposes worthy of human beings.
The objective should be human intelligence amplified by responsible technology: expanding knowledge, strengthening creativity, improving institutions, reducing unnecessary labor, solving difficult problems, and enlarging what human beings are capable of understanding and creating.
That is the standard by which Science Abbey believes artificial intelligence should ultimately be judged.
